This year has been one of our most exciting seasons as we unveil our very first show garden at the RHS Tatton Park Flower Show… Last year we contributed to young designer Lilly Gomm’s show garden by donating a coldframe to her stunning design. This year we’ve dove in feet first as she heads up the design of the whole garden featuring our RHS Portico greenhouse.
Greenhouses come in many shapes and sizes, from the miniature that is just big enough for one or two plants to grand glass houses for any number of plants. This makes greenhouse growing accessible for anyone, even if all you have is a balcony. But how do greenhouses work, and what are the benefits of having one?
If having a greenhouse is your dream but you are on a tight budget, buying a high-quality kit and building it yourself could be the solution. Not only will you save on installation costs but also on all the associated expenses, such as preparing the ground and laying foundations. Once you have completed the groundwork, you can order your greenhouse and start building.
If you ask gardening expert Eliot Coleman about cold frames, he will tell you are they the most dependable, least exploited piece of gardening kit you can buy. If you think of cold frames, you might be imagining the walled gardens of grand houses, and a team of gardeners toiling to grow pineapples or some other exotic in the English climate. In fact, cold frames are simple to make and use, and incredibly versatile in the garden.
