Worst homes market in three decades

Homeowners looking to up-size to a larger property face a tough task in todays market.

Figures released by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (Rics) show that the housing market is in its worst state for 30 years.

The number of sales has dropped to a three-decade low and 84 per cent of Rics members agreed that prices had fallen in their area in the two months between August and October.

The statistics, which show a 5.1 per cent drop in the average house price between September 08 and the same month last year, show that the best way of attaining more home-space is to extend.

A glazed extension can be a great way of opening up the home, giving extra space and allowing light to flow in.

Likewise, a loft conversion is a good way of adding an extra bedroom, and both home-improvements have been made easier with the government changing rules for planning permission.
