Like most gardeners at the mo, I’m just a little bit miffed with our weather. I was hoping it was going to behave itself for the remainder of the season. However August is in full flow and most days it feels like a damp and chilly autumn is almost here. #OurWeatherIsProperNutsThisYear.

August is always a strange month for me. A doldrums of a month. It feels like everyone else is on holiday. As the month progresses work emails return with the increasingly familiar ‘out of office’ reply. The weather doesn’t help. It’s as if it knows the schools have finished for the summer break, and with almost precision timing any hint of warm sunshine and blue skies disappears, only to return when shiny new uniforms herald the start of the new school year.

It’s not often I’m lost for words, but even I’m ever-so-slightly gobsmacked at just how utterly gorgeous my garden is now. I was hoping for this cacophony of colour by mid August, so to have it already is like some sort of magical and wonderful blessing.

“You’re going away in June … for five weeks”, was the general response to our plans to travel around the Highlands and Islands of Scotland this summer. Non-gardening friends thought it was a great idea. “The sort of thing you say you’ll do but never get round to,” said one. The gardeners we know however took more convincing.
