The town of Stevenage is among those set to benefit from a new £14 million funding package for green spaces across the country.

More than 12 per cent (£1.7 million) of the total fund will go to the Town Centre Gardens renovation scheme, according to the Big Lottery Fund (BLF).

The green space is considered the most formal and important in the area.

Some of the parks original historic features will be rejuvenated, while a new arrival space and horticulture area are to be created.

Local councillor John Gardner, who is responsible for environment and regeneration in the area, thanked both the BLF and the Heritage Lottery Fund for their donations.

"This project will not only reinvigorate the green lungs of Stevenage, but the heart of the community as well," he explained.

Other projects to benefit from the funding include Victoria Park in Londons Tower Hamlets and Horniman Gardens in Lewisham, which will share a pot of £367,000."ADNFCR-1495-ID-19126239-ADNFCR"
