Somerset gardener digs up funky potato

Henry Brown, of Hinton St George, discovered that some of his potatoes were growing on the stem of the plant, like a tree bearing fruit such as tomatoes, instead of underground, the Western Gazette – South Somerset reports.

The 72-year-old said he had never seen anything like it, while the “weird” spud had also baffled his neighbours.

“I did not see it at all until I came to dig it out of the ground,” he said. “The potatoes and tomatoes are part of the same family, but they don’t grown in the same way. I think my plant isn’t sure whether it’s a potato or a tomato.”

He went on to describe the potatoes in question as small and brown, suggesting they may not suitable candidates for the dinner plate
