Do homework on Easter DIY

Homeowners considering partaking in a spot of DIY over the Easter break have been advised to do their research and take care.

Insurance company esure suggested people call in the professionals for bigger jobs such as constructing conservatories or extensions.

"Remember to do your homework and make sure youre familiar with the basics before getting your hands dirty," advised head of risk and underwriting Mike Pickard.

"If in doubt, hire in professional help."

The firm pointed out that homeowners could be held liable if someone was injured due to their shoddy workmanship.

It also reminded customers to check their insurance policy to make sure it covers accidental damage as people can easily drill through water pipes, spill paint or knock over the TV when carrying out DIY.

Noting that the average household has over £5,000 worth of modern conveniences and electricals, esure advised home improvement enthusiasts to make sure they are covered.

The suggestion comes after Halifax and Saga warned customers that garden thieves are most active during the summer.
