Youngsters Help the North East Bloom

Children in Chester Le Street, County Durham, are getting their hands dirty and taking part in an exciting gardening project.

Youngsters from twenty-eight schools, along with children’s groups and youth groups have been given the opportunity to add a bit of colour to their school grounds.

The All Together Blossoming project is designed to encourage children and young people to become more environmentally aware, and to take pride in their surroundings. Robin Parker from Gabriel Ash stated:

“This is an exciting project for the children, and it’s great to see young people – the ‘gardeners of tomorrow’ taking an interest in their surroundings and local area.”

The children were asked to design and plant a half barrel with bulbs and plants to blossom this spring and summer.

Each institution to take part also received information about future growing projects and planting timetables. A commemorative plaque has also been presented as a reward for participation.

Karen Collins, project officer for Groundwork North-East, said:

“This project provided a fantastic opportunity to engage young people in gardening and learning about how to look after their environment.”
