Titchmarsh named as new Plant Heritage president

Garden and greenhouse enthusiasts with a passion for plant conservation may be interested to know that Plant Heritage has a new president.

According to the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), the conservation charity is to be headed up by none other than TV expert Alan Titchmarsh.

He praised the groups work and noted that it fights a great cause that will help the gardeners of both today and tomorrow.

The star will now use his status to help the organisation go about its duties protecting the UKs botanic wildlife.

Plant Heritage chairman Professor Michael Alder explained that Titchmarsh, who is also an RHS vice-president, should help raise awareness of the charitys work.

"Alan has an extraordinary ability to reach out to people from all walks of life and share with them his passion for plants and gardens," he said.

The expert replaces the late Robin Compton, who served the charity for 20 years prior to his death in 2009.

In other news, the RHS is allowing horticulture fans access to a number of private London gardens on Monday to celebrate the launch of its new book.
