The Sensory Garden for Dogs

An animal shelter in Bath has designed a “sensory garden” to help de-stress dogs with behavioural problems.

Bath Cats and Dogs Home new garden includes a bamboo forest, bubble machine, caves, ponds and sandpits as well as medicinal plants and herbs. The shelter believes that de-stressed animals will help stimulate a speedier re-homing process.

The garden was created with help of volunteers and local businesses and includes over 20 textured surfaces for dogs to explore.

Steve Hill from the shelter said;

“We get a wide range of dogs in desperate need of help, some of which find it hard to cope with kennels. The garden is all about enriching the lives of our animals and stimulating their senses. The sensory garden is designed to offer something to every dog, to encourage them to be more confident in their surroundings and to reduce stress.”

The shelter was inaugurated in 1937 and is a temporary refuge that helps more than 2500 animals per year.
