The Secret Victorian Garden

A lost Victorian garden has been uncovered by a couple in Northern Ireland, after they bought a house and cleared back 50 years of undergrowth.

The garden in Kircubbin has been restored to its former glory by new owners Noel and Karen Harrison, who will reopen the lost garden to the public.

The couple bought the Grade 1 listed Georgian house, built in 1800, in 2001, and have spent the last 12 years restoring the house, Tubber n a Carrig, and its garden.

They discovered that the tangled shrubbery surrounding the house masked a number interesting features including an 11 acre Victorian pleasure garden, a walled kitchen garden, a tennis court, greenhouses and a sunken trench, designed for servants to pass unseen.

Garden designer Trevor Edwards, was tasked with the restoration and has highlighted the scale of the task;

“It was totally overgrown – like a lot of Victorian gardens, it had been planted with bird cherry that had been left unchecked and had grown absolutely wild.”
