Thames’ Garden Bridge Gets Go Ahead

A “floating paradise garden” designed by London 2012 Olympic cauldron creator Thomas Heatherwick has been given the seal of approval by the Government.

The funding has been approved as part of the Government’s latest infrastructure plan which includes a £30million pledge to help fund the construction. In total, £150million is required to complete construction, with around half of that figure already having been raised through private donations and a £4million cash injection from Transport for London.

The idea was originally pitched by Joanna Lumley some 15 years ago, gaining traction in 2012 when Transport for London announced they were looking into investing in a new pedestrian bridge across the Thames from Temple tube station to the South Bank.

Organisers believe construction of the bridge could be completed as early as 2017.
