Superfruit smoothies

Growing your own fruit and veg can be especially useful for the health conscious who like to know exactly what they are eating.

Many health enthusiasts like to make their own fruit smoothies and juices these days, and using your own produce as ingredients helps ensure you know what you are ingesting.

According to the BBC website, to grow your own "superfruit" blueberries, all you need to do is plant two varieties, while dormant, in ericaceous compost, with the plants around 1.5 meters apart.

Then mulch with acidic peat or pine needles and water well.

Be sure to use a net to protect your blueberries, as pesky birds will often try to steal the superfruits of your labour.

Blueberries are renowned for their high levels of vitamins B6, C, and K as well as manganese and dietary fibre.

They are also know as an antioxidant and are thought to help reduce the risk of contracting some diseases including cancer.
