School kids muck in on garden clean-up

Pupils at a school in Reading have shown that they are a dab hand outside of the classroom by creating their own school garden.

Alfred Sutton Primary school pupils intend to use the garden to grow their own healthy vegetables.

They will then use the produce in cookery class in school, meaning that they are getting two lessons for the price of one.

Speaking to GetReading.co.uk, head teacher Val Preston thanked the parent teacher association (PTA) for organising the garden.

"Weve got a lovely walled garden which had become overgrown," she told the website.

"The PTA and children wanted to start a kitchen garden, so we got to work improving it.

"Now it has been cleared we will plant vegetables when the time is right. We are going to grow the produce and use it in our kitchen."

According to Ms Preston, around 30 children and their parents helped clear the garden, despite being told that the kids are unwilling to do the garden at home.

Hopefully the helping with the school garden will encourage them to get out and enjoy the garden and greenhouse at home.
