Record breaking year at Chelsea Flower Show

The Royal Horticultural Societys (RHS) Chelsea Flower Show 2010 comes to an end tomorrow (Saturday May 29th).

Horticulture Week noted how, despite a difficult build-up to the event, a number of records were broken by exhibitors.

One of the firms to achieve a milestone was Hillier Nurseries, which won a gold for the 65th year in a row in recognition of its Adventures In Gardening centrepiece display.

Managing director Andy McIndoe explained that he was delighted at the result and thanked his team for their "fantastic" efforts.

"We had a mighty battle with the elements this spring, and all credit goes to Ricky Dorlay, who brought all his 45 years [of] Chelsea experience to bear in preparing the Hillier plant material," he said.

The Daily Telegraph entry won the Best In Show gong, while Medwyns of Anglesey scooped the Presidents Award on its first appearance in five years.

Meanwhile, Horticulture Week recently reported that a legendary gardener has criticised some of the displays at the RHS event for being geared more towards the BBC cameras than the public.
