New Year Volunteer

As the warm glow of the Christmas and New Year period, gives way to the harsh reality that winter is likely to be with us for at least another couple of months, why not help recapture that warm feeling by volunteering for a few hours at your local garden?

Thrive, a charity which uses gardening as an occupational therapy for blind and partially sighted people, dementia sufferers, the disabled and pensioners who may find gardening difficult.

The charity has two main centres in the South East; Trunkwell Gardens at Beech Hill, near Reading, and Battersea Park in south London. They also run horticultural therapy schemes at hospitals, community allotments and village halls.

For more information visit: www.thrive.org.uk or call 0118 988 4844.

Another charity needing volunteers are Groundwork London (www.london.groundwork.org.uk), who help people improve their local neighbourhood and learn new skills.

Volunteer gardeners are needed all over Britain for organisations such as the National Trust, Perennial and English Heritage. The RHS are looking for volunteers in their regional gardens based in Yorkshire, Devon, Surrey and Essex.

If you can spare just a few hours, you can help make somebody’s 2013 a lot brighter.
