New National Trust garden for 2013

The National Trust, the ever-popular protector and provider of visits to stately homes and interesting gardens, has added an Edwardian-design garden in Wales to its map.

Dyffryn House, a Grade II listed house in the Vale of Glamorgan, is owned by Vale of Glamorgan council.  Its beautiful Grade I listed garden has been accepted on a 50-year lease by the National Trust who will take over its restoration and care.

The house and garden were originally owned by John Cory, a Welsh coal baron around the turn of the 20th century.  Landscape architect Thomas Mawson developed the 55-acre garden into an area of formal lawns with an arboretum and typically Edwardian themed ‘garden rooms’.

Vale of Glamorgan council took over the estate in 1996 and restored it with over £6 million in lottery funding.  The lease to the National Trust has been undertaken to increase the number of visitors and tourist revenue.

The Trust will be opening up five rooms in the house to allow visitors to experience spectacular views across the garden.
