Lawns do not need to be watered every day

Gardeners have been told that it is not necessary to water their lawns on a daily basis in the warmer temperatures.

The CBS News website reports that master gardener William Moss has provided some advice on how individuals can best maintain their summer gardens.

Among them is that when a lawn is watered it should be done so deeply and thoroughly and once this is done time should be left to allow the top few inches of soil to dry out.

Meanwhile, the ground should be soaked to a depth of six inches and any watering would be best done in the morning near dawn to limit the amount of moisure that gets lost through evaporation.

Furthermore, the more laid-back gardener may simply want to let their grass fade to brown and allow it to regain its green look through the winter months.

The website stated: "Rather than fight against nature, let cool-season grasses do what they naturally do and fade away in the summer heat.

"The lawn will look brown and dead, but it will only be brown and resting. As soon as cooler temps and rainfall return in September the lawn will green up again."

Gardeners wanting to keep their lawns green may also wish to consider an automatic sprinkler to ensure appropriate levels of moisture are maintained.
