Iranian Tree Planting Week

Last week was tree planting week in Iran. Every year, just before the Iranian New Year, millions of Iranians plant trees to mark the event.

Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khameni has urged government officials to do more to protect the environment of a country ravaged by international sanctions and poverty. He planted two saplings to mark the event, and has advocated the creation of green spaces in and around towns and cities.

Even the much maligned President Mahmoud Ahmedinijad got in on the act, inaugurating the Non – Aligned Movement Park in central Tehran. Mr Ahmedinijad planted a tree of peace and friendship in front of local representatives and ambassadors.

The Tehran Municipality has handed out one million saplings to citizens of the city, coupled with helpful “how-to” guides ahead of spring.

The aim is to help beautify the city of Tehran whilst fighting air pollution and aiding with land reclamation.

Last year 2,300 hectares of trees were planted.</p>
