How to protect container plants in hot weather

With many US states experiencing hot weather recently, garden and greenhouse enthusiasts have been encouraged to look out for their container plants.

According to Commercial Appeal horticulture expert Booker Leigh, specimens grown in pots often have very shallow roots and therefore struggle to survive when temperatures begin to climb.

He explained that most container plants require between one and 1.5 inches of water every week, which should be done all at once to allow the roots to soak up the moisture.

Growers should avoid watering in the midday sun for their own health, as well as that of their plants.

Mr Leigh added that drinking plenty of non-alcoholic liquids while working outside is also a good idea to ensure that you are getting the hydration you need as it is not only plants that need to take on more water in the summer.

The article also advised that gardeners use a slow-release fertiliser to help keep plants healthy, noting that rapid uptake could burn them.
