How to keep weeds at bay

Garden and greenhouse enthusiasts often face being pulled in multiple directions during summer, according to Grow It magazine.

The publication noted how many horticulturalists find their time stretched between work, domestic duties and family responsibilities, especially when the weather is good.

However, this can lead to a deterioration of the garden, with weeds quick to creep up and food crops likely to suffer.

In its latest issue, the magazine spoke to experienced allotmenteer Mike Woolnough, who suggested that gardeners use mulch to stifle any weeds that might pop up.

He added that careful watering can also reduce the chances of plants becoming diseased.

Magazine editor Benedict Vanheems noted that many gardeners are likely to be seeing their crops bearing fruit around now.

He revealed that his own plate has been full of fresh produce from the garden recently, with lettuce, tomatoes, carrots, spring onion and radish just some of the tasty foods available to him.

Meanwhile, the Royal Horticultural Society recently congratulated a nine-year-old girl who won a competition to have her garden design turned into a reality.
