Home owners consider extending

New research has revealed that UK home owners are considering upgrading their homes to accommodate extra family members.

The study showed that one in four (25 per cent) of the 2,000 adults questioned would consider adding an extension to the home to accommodate additional relatives.

This could mean converting a loft and installing a skylight or even building a glazed extension with folding sliding doors to offer extra living space.

Halifax Home Insurance head of underwriting David Rochester explained that the UK could soon experience a culture shift.

"The current economic and social climate in Britain is showing a shift towards several generations living together under one roof," he explained.

A glazed extension to the kitchen can offer an additional seating area to house new arrivals, while a loft conversion can provide an extra bedroom.

With house prices still making moving home seem like an undesirable option, many may consider extending or improving rather than moving.
