Greenhouse growers could save a fortune
The extent to which UK consumers could save money by growing their own food in a greenhouse has been underlined by a recent study from a food wastage campaign.
Love Food Hate Waste (LFHW), which aims to raise awareness of food wastage in the UK recently released research suggesting that Brits spend a massive £5 billion a year on shop-bought lunches.
"Even though the individual cost of lunch isnt that much, if you add it up over a month it amounts to an awful lot of money that we are spending," explained LFHWs Julia Falcon.
"When we are all trying to save it could become more important and when you match that against the food weve already got in the house, it doesnt make sense."
Only one in five UK workers re-use leftovers to make a packed lunch for work, despite the fact that over 80 per cent of workplaces provide a fridge or microwave.
Gardeners who use their greenhouses to grow their own food have the added advantage of having a ready supply of fresh, nutritious fruit and vegetables that can either be used on their own or with left-overs when making up a lunchbox.
