Greenhouse growers can go pro

Those with a passion for growing fruit and veg in their garden or greenhouse may want to consider taking their hobby to the next level.

The Soil Association has launched a project aimed at encouraging young people to take up a career in organic farming, and is offering apprenticeships for those with an interest.

The apprenticeships will arm participants with a wealth of knowledge on growing organically and on getting a job in the organic farming industry.

It is available across the country and will see young gardeners take it up a notch by carrying out work placements on farms.

Soil Association horticultural development manager Ben Raskin explained that he sees the scheme as an excellent way to maintain an experienced farm workforce in the UK .

"This is a great opportunity for anyone looking to start a career in organic farming or growing – particularly for those who choose not to take a formal education route," he added.

Prospective apprentices were recently able to find out more about the scheme by attending an open day at Hawkwood College near Stroud.
