Glass atrium to be built at new Briggait building

Morris and Spottiswood has been chosen to turn the Briggait building in Glasgow Merchant City into a centre for artists and art organisations complete with a glass atrium, it has been revealed.

The £5 million contract will result in the transformation of the Grade-A listed building into a cultural facility offering artists studios, creative industries retail/office spaces and a cafe and two exhibition/display spaces.

Notably, it will also include a glass atrium which will connect the upper and lower floors.

This will allow natural light to enter the artists studios.

Commenting on the contract win, Craig Murie, business unit director at Morris and Spottiswood, said: "We are delighted to be involved in the transformation of such an iconic building which is undoubtedly one of the best surviving market halls in the UK, and to be part of the team that will be responsible for giving the Briggait a new lease of life for many future generations."

An open glass atrium is also being constructed in the Cube, a 23 storey building being built in Birmingham.
