Gardens top up property value

An attractive garden can increase a propertys value by up to ten per cent, it has been asserted.

George Franks, head of estate agents Douglas and Gordon, tells the Times that a great south-facing garden can increase the value of a property by more than people may initially think.

"If you have two houses worth £800,000, the one with a garden will cost £50,000 more," he adds.

As such, the publication recommends a cross-section of features in a garden in order to appeal to the widest range of people possible.

It explains that usable space, which could include a patio or conservatory – is the most important feature of a garden as well as open space where children can play and shady spots to relax in the summer.

Meanwhile, business directory RatedPeople.com recently noted an increase in the amount of substantial home improvements, such as loft conversions and the installation of conservatories.
