Gardening market blooming

With the global economic downturn dragging most industries down with it, one market is bucking the trend, it has been reported.

According to USA Today, vegetable seed sales are up double-digits and the National Gardening Association (NGA) has predicted that the number of homes growing their own food will jump by more than 40 per cent over the coming year when compared to 2007 figures.

With such a rise in popularity, it would be reasonable to expect sales of greenhouses and gardening equipment to rise soon as more Americans look to provide for their families.

NGA research director Bruce Butterfield told the news provider that interest is at its highest for decades.

"As the economy goes down, food gardening goes up," he said. "We havent seen this kind of spike in 30 years."

A number of gardening shows have taken place this week including major ones in Rhode Island and Seattle.
