Gardening firm enjoys profit rise

Americans are increasingly getting their hands dirty in the garden and greenhouse, if figures from one horticulture firm are any indication.

According to businessweek.com, Scotts Miracle-Gro has enjoyed a strong start to the year, with second quarter profits up 53 per cent.

The firm, which specialises in gardening products, took in $118.5 million in the three months to April 3rd – up from $77.4 million in 2009.

It noted that consumer purchases at stores across the US were up seven per cent this year, with Sunday purchases rising by 11 per cent.

The data may highlight the increased interest in horticulture that seems to have followed the financial downturn, with people going back to basics in tough times.

Chief executive officer Jim Hagedorn said that, although the figures are positive, the company cannot afford to relax.

"The month of May remains a critical time of our year and our team will stay focused on continuing to drive our business during this peak season as well as throughout the year," the website reported him as saying.
