Gardeners World presenter criticises BBC over pesticide alternatives

Gardener’s World presenter Monty Don has criticised the BBC after the company said that he should mention non-organic alternatives. The BBC gave their view after Don stated that there was no other method of removing lily beetles from fritillaries than by handpicking them.

The company hit back at Don’s criticism, stating that he “often mentions non-organic alternatives and we will endeavour to ensure this is more consistent in future.”

However, Don responded, saying that these were “not his views”.

“I want to set the record straight,” the presenter said.

“The BBC can issue any statement they like but I can assure you I will not be promoting or advocating any non-organic products.

He added: “I was irritated when I saw the BBC’s statement and have asked why it was issued. Of course I will not be promoting non-organic products of any kind whatsoever and no one would expect me to.

“Any views that I express in any programme are my own. They are personal and that is always made very clear.”
