Gardeners bright idea to develop young horticulturalists

A gardener is pursuing an idea of sharing his passion for gardens and greenhouses with children all over Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.

John Cavill has founded social enterprise Simply Gardening for Schools and hopes to establish 200 school gardens over the course of the next five years, according to the Scunthorpe Telegraph.

His ambitious long-term goal is to establish gardens in every school in the area – a feat that would ensure children have the opportunity to learn gardening and greenhouse skills for the future.

"After doing a quiet area at Bowmandale School in Barton-upon-Humber in 2006, I realised we could make a massive difference to the lives of children with gardening," he told the newspaper.

"In October last year, we set up Simply Gardening for Schools and registered it as a social enterprise."

While the UK enjoys the space required to make building a greenhouse easy for many residents, land-scarce Japan has encouraged its farmers to look into the prospect of building greenhouses indoors in order to ensure a regular supply of fresh fruit and vegetables, according to the Associated Press.
