Flower show to celebrate Capital of Culture

Southport Flower Show is set to take place between August 21st and August 24th, with the show celebrating its 79th anniversary.

This years event will very much be focused on joining in with celebrations promoting Liverpool as the European Capital if Culture.

The show, renowned for being one of the friendliest and diverse in the UK, will focus on the heritage, architecture and arts of Liverpool.

One example of this will be 23-year-old gardening student Peter Cowells prize-winning design, which features the Mersey a Liver bird and a few nods to the citys architecture.

Show chief executive David Jackson explained that all of the gardens will be designed around the central theme.

"All our gardens feature Liverpool landmarks and highlights of the city," he said.

The show will include the David Bellamy Schools Competition and The Stefan Buczacki Photography Competition, as well as the usual bedding displays.

The Southport show is the largest independent flower show in the UK.
