Energy campaign could increase cost of new builds
Homeowners considering whether to move or improve may be interested to hear the cost of a new build residence could be pushed up by thousands of pounds due to government regulations.
That is the opinion of the Home Builders Federation (HBF), which stated new environmental standards could add between £5,000 and £7,000 to the price of a property.
It could mean those looking for more space may consider extending their current abode by investing in a conservatory or kitchen extension.
Commenting, HBF head of communications Steve Turner explained it is unreasonable to expect buyers to foot the extra cost, adding if developers take the hit then future projects could be under threat.
"People are struggling to get mortgages now and they will not be able to afford that increase in cost," he said, stating this meant it would have to be met by companies building the new homes.
The remarks come after energy and climate change secretary Ed Miliband recently revealed a new government campaign aimed at cutting carbon emissions by ten per cent in 2010.
