Dig The City Awards 2014

Winners of the first ever Dig the City Gardening Awards were announced this week. The urban gardening festival – which took place August 2nd -10th in Manchester city centre – has been dubbed an unqualified success.

18 show gardens were created around the centre of the city with the challenge of creating a garden in a small urban space. Judged by famed gardener Rachel de Thame and the National Trust’s Sean Harkin, entrants were of both an amateur and professional background.

Rachel said;

“We’ve been overwhelmed by the calibre and creativity of the show gardens. Urban gardens present unique challenges to gardeners and it’s very exciting to see these garden designs brought to life.”

“Best in Show” when to Hulme Community Garden Centre’s edible tunnel, which utilised vertical growing. The runner up position was awarded to Ordsall Hall’s heritage garden, drawing on its Tudor history.
