Differing illumination the best way to light up a space
A combination of different lighting is the best way to illuminate a space, according to the British Interior Design Association (Bida).
Dean Keyworth, former chairman of the organisation, explains that a variety of lighting arrangements can serve to make a small space seem larger.
For example, conservatories with features such as a sky light can benefit from a great deal of natural light, serving to make the area feel roomy and bright.
He adds that task lighting – such as lamps – can help with chores like close-up working and reading, while ambient luminosity is used to light up a room so that people can see, as well as to create atmosphere.
"The main thing in any room is the different levels of light – a mixture of lamps on low tables, wall lights and ceiling lights," Mr Keyworth concludes.
Research by financial services provider Saga suggests that 31 per cent of people have undertaken home improvements purely for cosmetic reasons, suggesting that an increasing number of people improve their homes to keep up with the latest trends.
