California to open new composting facility

Greenhouse and garden lovers in California will soon see the benefit of a new composting facility in the city of Rancho Cucamonga.

The site will receive its official dedication tomorrow (Friday May 8th) at 10:00 local time.

A joint venture between the Inland Empire Utilities Agency (IEUA) and the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County, the Inland Empire Regional Composting Facility will accept biosolids from wastewater treatment, as well as a variety of organic residuals.

It will produce environmentally-friendly, high-nutrient products for use in horticulture and agriculture.

"[The] dedication is a vision being realized. The composting facility utilises cost-effective methods to better manage salinity and biosolids, as well as clean the air, soil and water," explained IEUA director Michael Camacho.

IEUA executive manager for operations Patrick Sheilds added it is and "exciting" project due to its promotion of recycling organic materials – something he feels is important to the environment.

DailyPress.com yesterday (May 6th) suggested growers could get their groceries from their yards and greenhouses by planning a vegetable garden.
