Burnley Community Garden
A group of volunteers have begun work creating a community garden in Burnley, Lancashire. The aim is to create a community space where residents, both old and young, can plant fruit and vegetables.
The site, which measures half an acre, has been cleared of overgrown trees and shrubs with the help of The Prince’s Trust and The Basement Project Ltd, a not-for-profit organisation that works with local people to deliver community activities.
It is hoped the garden will become a valuable community asset, hosting workshops, promoting healthy lifestyles and encouraging the community to consume home grown produce. Local schools could also benefit, with organisers hoping to engage younger people in gardening and community activities.
The Basement Project Ltd was inaugurated in 2002, and relies on grants and donations to help develop community initiatives in the East Lancashire area.
