A New Generation of Horticulturalists

New figures are suggesting that 25-34 year olds are taking up gardening as pastime in record numbers.

A study of homeowners found that young people spent more than double than average on gardens in the last year. On average 25-34 year olds have been found to spend £747 on their outdoor spaces in the last year, more than double to national average of £366.

The study also found that 19% of young homeowners have a greenhouse, whilst 29% invested in new plants for their gardens this year.

The RHS Chelsea Flower Show was dominated by young designers and gardeners this year, revitalising the often stuffy image attributed to the world’s most famous gardening festival.

Frances Tophill, presenter of ITV’s Love Your Garden said;

“We’ve witnessed a real throwback to homeliness, with gardening, baking and cookery… coming back into popular culture.”
