The Upright Coldframe is an attractive free standing unit that is often placed against a wall or hedge.
The generous height of the upright coldframe, measuring 4' 7", allows a greater flexibility for growing than a standard cold frame would allow. Overall dimensions of the Upright Coldframe are 4' 2" wide, 2' 5" deep and 4' 7" height.
This coldframe is provided with two shelves that can be positioned at heights suitable for the plants you choose to grow.
Like our greenhouse staging, the shelving in the upright is made from Western Red Cedar and can be easily removed should you choose to grow taller plants.
The Upright Coldframe is essentially a mini greenhouse which would sit comfortably on a patio or terrace. Often used where there is not enough space to accommodate a greenhouse but still the want for fresh summer salads, herbs or vegetables.
The Upright Coldframe has a hinged lid for ventilation in the warmer months of the year. Whilst the coldframes are most productive in the summer they are by no means dormant in the winter gardening months. In the winter the coldframes can be used to over-winter pot plants and in the spring can be used to raise bedding plants, seeds and cuttings.
In the summer gardening in the upright is a breeze - open the hinged lid to provide perfect summer ventilation.
Like our other structures, our coldframes also come with a 12 year structural guarantee, giving you added security in your purchase.
The Upright Coldframe frame is delivered neatly boxed and in sections for easy self assembly. Please note that delivery of our coldframes is only to ground floor level.*
*As everything is made to order, delivery of all our accessories will take place up to 6 weeks after order confirmation. This could be sooner depending on the status of our production schedule at the time of ordering.

Circa. 2006 Bayliss changed the design of their ventilation system so that the piston can be removed, making the mechanism much simpler and more cost effective to maintain.
If purchasing a replacement piston firstly check that piston rod is located correctly in the hole in the top block. The rod is designed to disengage in windy conditions and may need to be reset manually. If the piston has stopped working, you may be able the slide the piston assembly out from the bottom block by loosening the m6 bolt in the block.
If you purchased your greenhouse before 2010, you will probably need the improved mechanism to replace the old. This can be easily figured out by loosening the M6 bolt on the lower fixing block. If the piston can be easily slid out, then you have the new design and only need to purchase the replacement piston.
Old type (Square Blocks) with fixed piston New type with replaceable piston
If your piston cannot be removed because the fixing block is too tight around the piston, then you have an old-style mechanism and need to replace each complete unit with the new design. If you are unsure as to which vent you have, please get in touch with us. One of our team will be happy to help.
Our unique full length ridge ventilation of our structures has been designed to work specifically with the Bayliss automatic opening system. They require no electricity to operate relying simply on the contraction and expansion of wax to open and close the greenhouse vents. The warmth of the greenhouse interior causes the wax to expand and push the vent open. Similarly, as the greenhouse cools the wax contracts and vents close.
All our greenhouses have these fitted to the ridge vents as standard. The autovents will operate efficiently for several years but, like any moving part, will need replacing over the extensive life of the greenhouse. Such an important greenhouse accessory is held in stock and are simple to replace.

MK7 autovents are used as standard in the roof opening lights in our glasshouse range.
You may also choose to install autovents to the side windows of your greenhouse using the Bayliss triple sprung Mk7 autovent.
Measuring approximately 12 inches (30cm) in length the MK7 can lift a vent weighing up to six kilos. At full stretch on a hot day the autovent will give a maximum opening of approximately 12 inches ensuring good air flow around the greenhouse – especially if used in conjunction with our unique ridge ventilation.
We provide stainless steel fixings and a cedar block with the autovent to ensure that it is correctly mounted to a Gabriel Ash greenhouse.
Please give consideration as to the positioning of the autovent in relation to any greenhouse staging or greenhouse shelving. It is often best to place such autovents on the opposite side of the greenhouse to the staging or shelving in order to avoid complications.
