Yorkshire horticultural event celebrates birthday

Garden and greenhouse enthusiasts in Yorkshire will be able to attend a milestone event in Ripon next month.

According to the Darlington and Stockton Times, the Ripon City Allotment Society is set to celebrate the 30th anniversary of its horticultural show on September 4th.

The free event takes place at Ripon Racecourse and has been running since the early 1980s.

It will welcome experienced gardeners and novices alike, with six of the 108 categories set aside for children and ten for beginners.

Doors open at 12:30 BST and society chairman Roger Satariano explained that he expects a large turnout since the popularity of fruit and vegetable growing is at its highest point since World War II.

"All Ripon’s council-owned allotment sites are fully occupied and there is a substantial waiting list for plots," he said.

The expert added that there will be plenty of tasty grub on display to inspire those thinking about learning more about growing in their own garden and greenhouse.

Meanwhile, the Cornishman reported that Cedar Croft Nurseries is celebrating its 20th anniversary by organising a giant pumpkin growing exercise.
