Garden and greenhouse enthusiasts may be interested to hear the colleges in Cambridge are to open their grounds to the public.

The event marks the universitys 800th anniversary and will see visitors granted access to numerous well-tended areas of botanical interest, according to the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS).

Visitors will be granted permission to view the area looked after by the widow of Charles Darwin, which is located in the grounds of Fitzwilliam College.

Other sites opening their gates include Homerton and Newnham, the University revealed.

Madingley Halls walled gardens will allow attendees to take in its medicinal border, rose pergola, hazel walk and alpine bed.

A number of free tours will be available at the open days, which run from September 11th to 13th.
