Take care with DIY over Easter

Home insurance firm esure has warned homeowners to take care if carrying out DIY over the Easter weekend.

According to the company, the average household contains over £5,000 worth of mod cons and electricals, meaning an accident could prove costly.

It encouraged people to check to see if accidental damage is covered in their policy and suggested things like drilling through a water pipe, knocking over a TV or spilling paint can be common occurrences.

The company also pointed out that homeowners are held liable if someone injures themselves as a result of shoddy workmanship and advised that professional help is sought for bigger jobs like building a conservatory or laying a patio.

Head of risk and underwriting Mike Pickard said it can be easy to take on too much over the Easter break.

"Remember to do your homework and make sure youre familiar with the basics before getting your hands dirty," he advised. "If in doubt, hire in professional help."

Insurance companies also recently warned conservatory owners that garden thieves were most likely to strike during the summer months.
