If you wish to grow a selection of bulbs outdoors then there are a number of steps that you can take to ensure that you are provided with healthy plants in time for spring.

Crocuses, tulips, daffodils and dahlias are just a few of the many bulbs that you can plant in time for spring. You can easily obtain bulbs from a catalogue or your local garden centre.
Be sure to select good quality bulbs and plant them immediately afterwards.
If you are unable to plant them straight away, then store them in a cool, dry place until you are able to do so.

Selecting bulbs that are of good quality will increase your chances of growing a selection of plants to brighten up your garden. Obtain bulbs from a trusted source and make sure that they are firm and in a suitable condition for planting.

Choose a suitable location to plant your bulbs.
If you are unfamiliar with their requirements, then research the needs of your bulbs before you plant them.
Daffodils need to be planted in an area with plenty of sunlight whilst tulips prefer cooler temperatures. Plant tulips when temperatures are cooler but before the frost hits, so that they have time to settle into the ground.

Plant your bulbs in your desired pattern and water them thoroughly. They will need well-drained soil and access to the right amount of sunlight.
For extra protection, you may wish to consider growing your bulbs in a set of cold frames. Bulbs can also be grown indoors if you have enough space.

Planting your bulbs in October – December will provide them with a wide range of benefits.
Temperatures are cooler during this season, so there is less risk of problems such as plant disease or pests. Your bulbs have more chance of growing successfully during this season and with the right amount of care, will provide you with a colourful garden in time for spring.

If you are planning to grow your bulbs in a greenhouse, then be sure to add the correct amount of heating and lighting to help them thrive. Greenhouse growing is particularly ideal in winter, as you can keep your bulbs protected from frost and snow.
