Space not an issue for growing food

Garden and greenhouse lovers have been advised to consider growing their own food.

Those who do not have their own green space should consider finding or starting a community garden, American Community Gardening Association board member Laura Lavid told USAWeekend.com.

"Its also a good way to get to know your neighbours," she said. "The key is having the communitys support from the start."

Ms Lavid told the news provider that holding a community meeting or talking to neighbours is a good way to gauge interest.

She advised finding land owned by non-profits, schools, housing authorities and parks to ensure it is not sold and the garden lost.

The expert explained some community gardens are around 5,000 sq ft, with individual plots between ten and 15 sq ft.

Gardeners with their own greenhouse are able to grow tomatoes, peppers and other foods even in colder climates.
