Southport Flower Show gets into the swing

The Southport Flower Show is in full swing and is expected to attract around 80,000 visitors over the four days.

With gardeners on hand to issue advice on how best to grow flowers, plants, fruit and vegetables, the event is likely to be a useful excursion for any amateur or professional gardener.

The event, located in Victoria Park, features a giant pink sculpture with the aim of helping to raise money for the Breast Cancer Campaign.

In celebration of Liverpool being awarded 2008 European Capital of Culture, the show has taken Liverpool as a theme

Southport Flower Show chief executive David Jackson told the Liverpool Daily Post that he hopes the show will be enjoyed by people of all ages.

"Its an ideal environment for children to learn about gardening from friendly, down to earth experts, like David Bellamy," he said.

Other celebrities at the event include ITV Loose Women presenter Coleen Nolan, who opened the show this morning.
