A new scheme is uniting keen horticulturalists who don’t have their own growing area with garden-owners who are unable to work in their outside space.
In an article for the Daily Mail, Sarah Chalmers revealed the Garden Partners scheme pairs up willing gardening and greenhouse enthusiasts with somebody over 60 years old.
London-based 28-year-old Lauren Hurrell was partnered with Valerie Chamberlain, 76, whose 30ft garden is less than a mile from Lauren’s flat and she says it has transformed her life.
"I have begun a course in horticulture and now work a four-day week," Ms Hurrell commented. "I have a much better work-life balance and I’ve loved getting to know Valerie. We always have a cup of tea and a chat."
In a recent article for the same publication, Martyn Cox suggested that lilies can brighten up any outside space and could be a great addition to borders and patios in 2011.
