RHS Young School Gardener 2013

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has launched its search for 2013’s Young School Gardner of the Year. Last year’s competition was won by 11 year old Lucas Hatch. His prize was a certificate, personalised trowel and £5000 worth of gardening vouchers for his school. He also got to spend the day with RHS Wisley curator, Colin Crosbie.

The competition was launched originally in conjunction with the RHS Campaign for School Gardening scheme in 2007. Aimed at children up to the age of 16, the scheme’s aim is to support and encourage UK schools to use a garden as a teaching resource.

Sarah Cathcart, Head of Education and Learning at the RHS said;

“Lucas has had a brilliant year, despite being on TV and in the papers … success hasn’t gone to his head, and most of the time he’s still outdoors, doing what he loves best – gardening and growing plants.”

The winner of RHS Young School Gardner of the Year will be announced on 12 July 2013.
