Public in favour of Big Energy Shift

The public is in favour of governmental moves to help cut carbon emissions from UK homes, according to research published today (April 20th).

With chancellor Alistair Darling set to unveil the caps for the countrys first three carbon budgets, Department of Energy and Climate Change figures suggest the majority of homeowners are behind the Big Energy Shift plans.

The scheme involves some seven million households being offered "whole-house" upgrades with energy efficiency and micro-generation technology by 2020.

By 2030, it is hoped every home in the UK will have been offered the changes – something that may be of interest to those considering buying a conservatory or glazed extension.

"People are enthusiastic and positive about the need for better energy efficiency in our homes and communities," explained energy and climate change secretary Ed Miliband.

While older conservatories could be draughty and let heat escape, quality new constructions help retain energy while providing views of the garden.

The Guardian newspaper today gave details of how horticulture fans could make the most of their land for little money.
