Organic growers up for top award

Organic vegetable growers Dr Wendy Seel and Dr Anne Taylor are among those on the shortlist for a BBC Radio Food and Farming Awards 2008 Farmer of the Year Award, according to Aberdeen newspaper the Press and Journal.

Their company Vital Veg delivers their vegetables directly to customers doors in Aberdeenshire and has been running for three years.

"One of our customers, Frank Gibson, put us forward for the award and when he called us to let us know that he had entered Vital Veg, we were overwhelmed that he had taken the time out to do that for us," Dr Seel told the Press and Journal.

"When we found out wed made it through to the finals, we were delighted."

The finals take place at the BBC Good Food Show at the NEC in Birmingham on November 26th.

Growing organic fruit and veg has become a popular pastime among UK gardeners.

It is a great way of getting a healthy portion of fruit and veg every day and also helps the environment by reducing the need for food to be imported or transported.
