Now a great time to add a conservatory or loft conversion

Following the governments announcement that VAT is to be cut by 2.5 per cent until the end of next year, now may be a great time to add a conservatory or a loft conversion.

Adding an extension to the home can be a great way of increasing the available living space without having to sell a property for an unfavourable price.

According to the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, a loft conversion can even add as much as £10,000 to the value of a home.

As part of the conversion, it can often be useful to install a roof light to allow a flow of natural sunlight into the room – saving on electricity during the daylight hours.

National Home Improvement Council director Andrew Leech advises homeowners to consult experts to make sure they get things right.

"Anyone thinking about a loft conversion should consult a surveyor or architect to see if its possible first," he said.

"You still need to ask the local authority as you need building regulation permission even if you dont need planning permission."
