Manchester Legends Back Urban Bee Campaign

Bez, the self dubbed “freaky dancer” of Madchester heroes Happy Mondays has offered his unlikely support to an urban bee scheme in Manchester.

Bez, real name Mark Berry, has helped install two bee hives on the roof of Manchester’s The Printworks venue.

As has been well documented, the British bee population is in rapid decline, and Bez has been learning to keep bees on the Cwm Yr Hoel Farm in Wales, where he now lives.

Bez inspected the new hives along with Canon Adrian Rhodes, who is also keeping four hives on the roof of Manchester Cathedral. Canon Rhodes said;

“In the wild colonies they don’t last very long, so really bee keepers are keeping the honey bee population alive.”

New hives normally cost £800, but Bez said he purchased his for £50 “off some fella”.

Another Manchester star, Liam Gallagher, has previously backed bee saving measures;

“We’ve got to save them before they all buzz off. It’s important. It’s a really worthwhile cause”
