Leeds Secret Garden
A resident of Roundhay, Leeds has opened up his garden to the general public for the first time. Nick Wilson has created a jungle garden, filled with tropical shrubs and plants, where once a simple lawn lay. Boasting timber walkways and ponds filled with koi carp, the garden is also home to banana trees, bamboo and palms.
When Nick moved into his home 20 years ago, his 85ft by 30ft garden was a simple lawn that stretched from his house to his hedge. The last two decades have been spent tirelessly transforming his garden into the tropical oasis it is today.
Despite the cold English weather, Nick says most of his plants cope relatively well through the winter months, although he does move his banana plants inside;
“I’m not overly bothered about mowing lawns. I had always wanted a garden with wooden walkways and koi carp and lush planting.”
The garden has been opened to the public as part of Roundhay Environmental Action Project (REAP), and aims to inspire visitors by showing them what can be done with a plot of land, regardless of size.
